Moderation
This is a moderated forum and staff monitor posts to ensure reasonable compliance with the Users' Agreement. Staff are grateful that members often assist us by reporting posts which don't comply. There is a report icon in every post and when a member clicks on the icon, staff receive notice and can decide how to proceed.

Members of this forum usually post in accordance with the Users' Agreement but when this doesn’t happen, staff use a range of strategies to address this. Depending on the situation, the strategies include advice; suggestions; requests; informal warnings and formal warnings. Warnings are always recorded and the member is informed of a formal warning via Personal Message (PM) and (usually) within the thread too. Formal warnings are active for one year from the date of issue but accrued active, formal warnings result in suspensions. The staff have recently produced a guideline for suspensions, which we are publishing here for members’ information.

In the majority of situations:
The 3rd active, formal warning = 1 week suspension
The 4th active, formal warning = 1 month suspension
The 5th active, formal warning = Permanent ban

In order to arrive at this final point, a member would have to accrue 5 formal warnings within one year, as warnings older than one year would have expired.

Staff will issue immediate, permanent bans for spammers and anyone who opens a sock puppet account while suspended/banned.

When appropriate, staff will apply the above sanctions flexibly eg suspend/ban a member for a serious offence before the 3rd warning. Examples would be extreme racist rants, serial flaming, persistently abusive PMs to other members etc.

When it is unclear whether to issue a formal warning, staff will discuss the situation and reach an agreed decision.

If a member wishes to appeal against a sanction, s/he should send a PM to the moderator who issued it and discuss the matter. If the moderator isn't online for a while or if the member isn't happy with the outcome of the PM discussion, the member may start a thread in the Tech Support Forum. Staff decisions (including bans) can also be appealed against by emailing
forumadmin@richarddawkins.net .
